If your dog doesn't like someone you probably shouldn't either (Unknown)
19 May 2006 – David Miliband, recently appointed Secretary of State for environment, food and rural affairs (Defra) posted the following comment in a blog on the Defra website:-
“We are a nation of animal lovers and believe that animals should be treated accordingly. Aged nine, and just bitten by a dog, I might have felt that they should also treat us appropriately. But I have got over that and am delighted to find myself responsible for the Department that owns the government’s policies on the health and welfare of animals. The Animal Welfare Bill is a real force for good: for the first time it puts into law not just that people should not cause suffering, but that they should take positive steps to look after their animals' welfare. It starts its Committee stage in the House of Lords next week.”
With the Animal Welfare Bill starting its Committee stage in the House of Lords and the impending Review of the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966, I couldn’t help but think would it not have been better if Blair had found someone who perhaps was a dog owner to be the Defra Secretary of State in his recent Cabinet reshuffle? For some reason I suddenly thought of Peter Mandelson walking his golden Labrador, Bobby. Maybe he could be parachuted back into Hartlepool from Europe?
